How do you redesign an engineering consultancy's website without losing its existing rankings?

Overview

An engineering consultancy that goes from 3D scanning to BIM deliverables.

EFFI Engineering is a technical engineering consultancy that has been operating since 2009. 3D scan surveys, BIM models, thermal studies and calculations: the company handles everything from the existing building to the deliverable, in-house, and secures its clients' projects from the on-site survey to the usable file. It is precise know-how, but hard to explain to anyone outside the trade. The new website had to make it understandable to the people who buy the service, without taking anything away from its technical rigour.

Context & challenges

A website that no longer did justice to the company's work.

The old website had aged and no longer did justice to the company's work. Yet an engineering consultancy sells intellectual work whose result is a file: hard to show, hard to compare, and often hard to understand for the client who actually needs it.

On top of that comes a difficulty specific to 3D scanning and BIM: these are specialist terms. Clients, for their part, are looking to secure a project, avoid a nasty surprise on site or get a reliable plan of an existing building. They do not describe their need using the trade's vocabulary.

Finally, the old website already had pages visible on Google. The redesign had to change the substance and the form without breaking what worked. It also had to convey the expertise without jargon, and lead every visitor towards booking a meeting or requesting a quote:

  • A trade that is hard to explain: 3D scanning and BIM mean something to insiders, much less to those who buy the service.
  • Rankings to preserve: a poorly prepared redesign can make pages that were already visible disappear from Google.
  • Making contact obvious: every page had to lead to booking a meeting or requesting a quote.
Our role

A full redesign, from structure to content.

We reworked the website as a whole rather than touching it up. The site structure was revised so that each service has its own page and its own path from Google, and the home page journey was rebuilt around the questions clients ask themselves.

The content was rewritten page by page. Each service is presented by what it solves before being named by its acronym: 3D scanning becomes a reliable survey of the existing building, BIM a deliverable that every party on the project can use. The redirects were prepared in parallel, address by address.

  • Structure: reworked site structure and home page journey.
  • Copywriting: content rewritten page by page.
  • Redirects: every old address points to the right page, so that no existing ranking is lost.
  • Development: WordPress and Elementor, complemented by custom HTML and CSS.

Approach & methodology

Explaining the trade before selling it.

The website starts from the problem, not the technology. The promise fits in one line on the home page: from scan to BIM deliverable. It states the full scope without forcing visitors to understand the whole technical chain before reading on.

We then planned a double call to action. Booking a meeting serves projects that still need scoping, while the free quote serves requests that are already precise. Each visitor finds the door that matches how far along their project is, without hesitating between forms that look alike. The home page follows the order of the questions a client asks:

  1. Recognise yourself: a “Sound familiar?” block names the client's situations before talking about services.
  2. See the evidence: scan-to-BIM projects, equipment and industry-standard tools.
  3. Picture the result: the deliverables, software by software, to market standards.
  4. Understand the method: “How we work”, step by step.
  5. Clear up the last doubts: client reviews, frequently asked questions and articles explaining 3D scanning and BIM.
Solutions & art direction

Modules designed for a technical trade.

For a trade whose result is a file, the visual challenge was to show what the client receives. The before/after comparison slider answers that question: by dragging a handle, visitors move from the point cloud produced by the scan to the model produced by the team.

Past projects take centre stage, because an engineering consultancy is judged on its references: these are real projects, not generic examples. The blog and the training section complete the set-up: they demonstrate expertise to visitors and also feed the website's SEO.

  • Before/after slider: a handle to drag to move from the point cloud to the model.
  • Deliverables by software: Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, SolidWorks and the other formats, each detailed in its own tab.
  • A four-step method: so the client always knows where their project stands.
  • Past projects: real projects, presented as references.
  • Calls to action from the very first screen: “Book a meeting” and “Free quote”, repeated throughout the page.

A clean foundation for Google and AI assistants.

A redesign changes the addresses, titles and structure of pages. Without preparation, pages that already appeared on Google can disappear from the results. So we treated SEO as part of the project, not as a finishing touch added after launch.

The same work serves AI assistants, which rely on well-described pages to answer a question. A clear title, structured data and an up-to-date sitemap say in a few lines who the company is and what it offers. What can be checked on the website today:

  • Structured data: the company is described as a professional service (schema.org ProfessionalService), with its pages and articles.
  • Tags written one by one: a title and a description that state the trade in one line.
  • Sitemap: pages, projects and articles declared to search engines.
  • Redirects: the old website's addresses point to the new ones.

Conclusion

A website that matches the quality of the company's work.

The new website presents EFFI Engineering's trade as it really is: precise, technical, and geared towards booking meetings. A non-specialist visitor can understand what the company does, at what stage of their project to call on it, and how to get in touch.

That is what was missing for a trade whose value is real but hard to see. In his review, the client mentions “a fresh perspective, relevant ideas and real suggestions for improvement”, brought “while always listening to what we expected”; his full review appears just below.

What you might be thinking

Too expensive compared with what? A website that does not convert costs you lost quotes every month. Hours spent re-entering data, chasing and searching for a file cost just as much, without ever showing up on an invoice. Our prices are stated before we start, and you can judge the work before committing: a trial mock-up at €390 for a website, a scoping session at €490 for software, both deducted from the project. We do not start anything until that calculation seems obvious to you.

The right time is before you are overwhelmed, not during. A website is delivered in 14 days. For software, the timeline is fixed in writing at the scoping session. In both cases, we take on most of the work. And if you are going through a busy period, we plan the start date with you rather than rushing you.

If your website brings you regular enquiries and your tools keep up, keep them. If your team juggles spreadsheets, emails and paperwork, or if you no longer dare to show your website, it is quietly costing you. The first call is there to tell you honestly whether it is better to keep, improve or rebuild. Sometimes we advise a simple touch-up rather than a full project.

At first, yes. After that, you pay a per-user subscription that rises as your team grows, for a tool that imposes its own way of working and of which you only use a part. Custom software does what you need, nothing more, and it belongs to you. It is the same reasoning as with business premises: renting costs less in the first month, rarely over ten years.

That is why everything is written down before we start: what we deliver, at what price, by when. A single point of contact, steps approved one by one and 30 days of iterations included. Nothing is coded before you approve it. You keep every project document, and nothing important is decided verbally.

We need a scoping call, a few approvals and your content. For software, we start from the way you work today: you show it to us, we turn it into a tool. You decide, we build. In practice, most of your time goes into the scoping session, and the approvals after that are short.

You approve the mock-ups before any development, and you get 30 days of iterations included from the date the quote is signed. We keep reworking until you approve, within the scope agreed together, with no charge for revisions. And if the art direction does not suit you, we rework it before writing a single line of code.

No. Your website and your software belong to you, code and data included. You are trained to use them, and another professional can take over if you decide to. Access details, hosting and documentation are handed over to you on delivery, with nothing held back.

You choose. We can handle everything, hosting, backups and updates, or hand you the keys so that your usual provider can take care of it. Either way, access is in your name from day one, and you can change your mind along the way.

That is planned for. Custom software can be changed: we add a step, a field, a role, without rebuilding everything. Each change is priced separately and you decide whether it is worth the cost. That is the difference with an off-the-shelf tool, where you wait for the vendor to have the same idea as you.

Often, yes. We start by looking at what exists: what holds up, what is worth keeping, what costs more to fix than to rebuild. That is exactly what the scoping session is for, and sometimes it concludes that there is not much to throw away.
